Washington D.C., which is also referred to as the District of Columbia, is the capital of the United States. This city is known for its many attractions and it is also known for its transportation. Washington D.C. is one of the worst cities for traffic. Studies have shown that commuters spend an average of 70 hours per year waiting because of traffic delays.
Washington D.C. is indeed one of the worst cities for drivers, but it is ideal for those who prefer to walk and/or take public transportation. Approximately 37 percent of the residents use public transportation to get to work. The Washington Area Metropolitan Area Transit provides residents and tourists with bus and rail service. Everyday, over 400,000 people use the metrobus in Washington D.C. The city ranks second on the list of best cities for public transportation. The transit system is also known for being the second-fastest in the country.
Washington D.C. is also a very walkable city. Studies have shown that 80 percent of the residents live in a neighborhood that is not car dependent. Researchers have also found that 11 percent of the residents walk to work. Washington D.C. ranks seventh on the list of the most walkable cities in the country. This city also has a lower obesity rate that many other cities because so many people walk. In fact, Washington D.C. was named the fittest city in 2010. Residents and tourists also love the fact that schools, restaurants and places of entertainment are often close together.
Washington D.C might not be the best city for people who like to drive because the roads are almost always congested. However, people who do not own a car would love this city because it is easy to get where one needs to go using the public transit system. Additionally, it is very easy to get around on foot.
