About Washington DC
The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is located in the middle of the historic Shaw neighborhood, between N Street and Mount Vernon Place and between 7th and 9th Streets in downtown DC. The convention center is home to a multitude of events -- from car and cooking shows to conventions, festivals, galas and everything in between.
The convention center bears its name from the first home-rule mayor of the district, Walter E. Washington, who vowed to make creating a convention center in downtown DC a top priority during his administration. In 1983, the National Historical Wax Museum building was converted into a convention center and was ranked as the 4th largest convention center in the country. By 1995, the convention center was ranked as the 30th largest convention center.
In 1998, groundbreaking ceremonies occurred at the new convention center site and in 2003, the new Walter E. Washington Convention Center opened its doors. The center received the Best New Convention Center accolades by Meetings East Magazine in 2004. Since breaking ground, more than 1 million people visit the new convention center each year.
There is plenty to see and do in and around the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The Shaw neighborhood is home to a multitude of restaurants, shops, hotels and more. The neighborhood is also within walking distance to the City Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the International Spy Museum and the National Museum Women in Arts. Other nearby historical buildings and attractions include the White House, Ford's Theatre, Chinatown, the Newseum, the Japanese American Memorial and much more.
